JEEP STUFF

After quite a few requests, here are some pictures of my '94 Jeep Wrangler (YJ) and it's integration of radio equipment.

The top request is for info about the antenna mounting. I use standard mirror mounts for both antennas. This one, for HAM radio, is mounted on the third brake light riser. The white wire going into the antenna connection is from the Icom AH-4 antenna tuner. Before I had the AH-4 I used Hamstick antennas with quick disconnects. The Hamsticks out-performed the AH-4 & 102" whip combo on every band!

Here is a view of the rear of the third brake light riser. I used both halves of the antenna mount so the bolts only pull against the heavy-duty aluminum, not the flimsy Jeep metal.

The inferior CB antenna is mounted to the spare tire stop. As you can tell, this has been installed for a few years. This is not the best place for Ham Radio antennas, but for CB it's just fine.

Another look at the spare tire stop antenna mount.

Interior mess? Yep. Sorry I don't have the radio installed at the time these pictures were taken. But you should get an idea of how things are configured. The mounting plate is a piece of sheet aluminum cut to fit. The fingers are bent up and drilled. The front and rear edges of the plate are covered with PVC pipe. The green thing is a felt covering on a hose clamp. Two sets of three long hose clamps are strung together and wrapped around the radio and mounting plate. The felt helps protect the radio from scratches.

Here is a view of the mess of cables and the two sets of hose clamps. The PVC edge cover is slit and slid over the aluminum. It is not attached in any way; it is kept in place with the hose clamps.

Sorry it's such a poor picture. The radio is mounted with the rear of the set facing the drivers side door. This provides easy access to all the ports and connectors. In my vehicle I use Two Antennas (one HF and one VHF), Power, Ground, and External Speaker (mounted under the dash above the drivers right leg).

I don't have any pictures of the CB mounting. It's a lightweight and cheap Cobra 19 that is mounted under the dash above the passengers left leg.
